British Airways has halted all Gatwick to New York flights until at least next year because of engine delivery delays. Despite rising demand for the JFK route during Christmas, hundreds of flights have been cancelled in the coming months. Flights from December 12 to March 25 are affected due to a shortage of parts for the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

These engines power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. British Airways stated that this decision was made due to the prolonged nature of the issue, aiming to provide certainty to customers. The airline has apologised and offered most affected passengers alternative flights on the same day with British Airways or partner airlines.

The company continues to work closely with Rolls-Royce to mitigate the impact on schedules and customers, seeking a prompt and reliable solution. Rolls-Royce acknowledged the supply chain constraints affecting the entire aerospace industry and is working to minimise the impact on customers like British Airways.

Initially, 24 of the airline’s Boeing 787s used these engines since 2007, but the delay in obtaining parts has reduced this number to 19. Flights between London Heathrow and JFK remain unaffected and are operating as usual.
