Students at an elite private school have been banned from staging elaborate ‘promposals’ when inviting other students to their upcoming prom.

Aquinas College, a Catholic school in Ashmore on Queensland’s Gold Coast, banned all “promposals” for the graduating class of 2025 on Wednesday.

A proposal is an often elaborate and eye-catching way for students to ask each other if they would like to be their date for the prom.

Aquinas College has suggested that students who post images of their proposal on social media are looking for validation rather than worrying about their date.

The private school has reportedly threatened to suspend all students participating in a proposal since the ban was announced on Wednesday.

One student called the ban ‘wrong’.

“A proposal was a show of respect, solidarity and compassion for the person you are proposing to,” they told the Courier mail.

“It shines a light on love, friendship and kindness within the school community.

“Promposals are seen as a way to bring the college community together for the love of implementing the school value of belonging.”

Aquinas College has been in existence since 1964 and currently has an estimated 860 students.

Students in years nine through 12 pay more than $5,000 in tuition each year.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Aquinas College for comment.
