A super PAC backing former President Donald Trump introduced a website on Tuesday criticising Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for his connections to China, just hours before the vice presidential debate. The “Tiananmen Tim” website, developed by Make America Great Again Inc., accuses the Democratic figure of prioritising China over America and fabricating his presence in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Between 2009 and 2019, Walz claimed multiple times he was in East Asia during the turmoil. However, local reports from Nebraska, his home state, indicate he remained there until August 1989. Tim Walz faces a congressional investigation regarding his ties with China, having expressed strong support for the country in the past. The site highlights Walz’s numerous visits to China, including his honeymoon around the crackdown’s fifth anniversary.

Trump adviser Jason Miller commented on X about the revelation, hinting at its potential mention during the debate against GOP rival Senator JD Vance. This debate marks the first direct confrontation between Vance and Walz and the final debate before the 2024 election. Both Trump and Harris have pledged a firm stance on China if elected, amidst the US struggle to maintain trade dominance.

The MAGA Inc. website also points out Walz’s previous statements against an adversarial relationship with China and his acknowledgment of some Chinese officials advocating for greater rule of law. Walz’s early career included teaching English in China and founding “Educational Travel Adventures,” which facilitated American student travels to China.

MAGA Inc. spokesperson Kaelan Dorr criticised Walz’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party, asserting that such connections should be disqualifying in Kamala Harris’s view, given the administration’s perceived failures in border security and economic management.
