Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was at the club’s training ground in Carrington early on Monday morning as he looked to put the weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham behind him.

The Dutchman is the bookmakers’ favorite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his position after seeing his United side take just seven points from their opening six games.

Ten Hag had a somber expression on his face, as seen when he drove into Carrington while it was still dark outside.

United were asked about his future after Sunday’s defeat at Old Trafford. But he replied, ‘No, I don’t think about this.

“We all made this decision together to stay together as an owner and leadership group over the summer. We have also made a decision based on a clear evaluation on what we need to improve and how we want to put together a team.

‘But we knew it would take some time, given the period when some players arrived late, such as Ugarte. We also need to make some improvements in the organization, some injuries, we need some time.

“We are all on one page or in one boat, the owners, the staff and the players. I don’t have that concern.’

Ten Hag came close to losing his job at the end of last season after overseeing United’s lowest finish in Premier League history (eighth), although United then won the FA Cup.

United’s owners, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, looked for possible replacements before ultimately deciding in July to stay with Ten Hag, whose contract was extended until June 2026.

Ten Hag also received support in the transfer market this summer, with United signing Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte.

Four of those players played against Spurs, with only Yoro missing due to a foot injury sustained in pre-season.

But United were far inferior to Tottenham, who should have been more than 1–0 up by the time Bruno Fernandes was shown a questionable red card for a foul on James Maddison in the 42nd minute.

After being dominant against United’s 11 men, Spurs continued to lead the match against 10 as Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke joined Brennan Johnson on the scoresheet at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Sunday evening, Jamie Redknapp described United’s latest performance as ‘the kind of performance that kills the manager’.

Former Spurs and Liverpool captain Redknapp also said: ‘If your club is actively looking for another manager you are in a hugely untenable position because the players know you are not the man. You cannot keep the manager after searching for other managers.

‘They play like they’re lost. The players they brought in don’t look good. This club has attacking DNA. I see too many players not putting in that extra effort. That’s not how this club was built.

‘I don’t see how he can keep his job with these performances. I don’t know how he can turn it around. I know he won two trophies last year, but I don’t know how he can take them further, but I don’t know who that is.

‘They’ve scored five goals in six games, Man United. This is a graveyard for great players. Everyone who comes here goes downhill. Everyone is so devoid of trust and faith.”
