West Bengal’s healthcare system was hit for the tenth day in a row on Sunday as unruly junior doctors at government hospitals continued to strike, demanding justice for the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city.

Since the outpatient clinics of government hospitals are closed on Sundays, there was less crowd as senior doctors visited the emergency rooms to treat the visiting patients.

“We are not here to affect the healthcare system. We can understand the problems of the patients but our protest is very relevant in this context as a doctor on duty was raped and murdered. Is this what we expect when we come to work? We will continue our protest until our sister gets justice and the government provides complete security for us,” an agitated doctor told PTI.

The body of the female trainee doctor was found in a seminar room of the hospital on August 9. A civilian volunteer was arrested the next day on suspicion of involvement in the crime.

The young doctors demand that the perpetrators be punished as soon as possible and that the victim’s autopsy report be made public.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the investigation into the case be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which began the probe on August 14.
