The Minnesota Vikings will be without rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy for the entire 2024 season due to a meniscus injury.
On Tuesday, the Vikings said McCarthy had a torn meniscus in his right knee, but they were unsure of the timetable for his return. However, surgery on Wednesday revealed he will need a complete repair and won’t return until 2025.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that JJ McCarthy underwent successful surgery this morning. He is expected to make a full recovery and will miss the entire 2024 season.

McCarthy led Michigan to a national title last season before being drafted by the Vikings with the 10th pick.
McCarthy was injured at one point in his preseason debut on Saturday, when he went 11 of 17 for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Las Vegas. McCarthy reported persistent muscle soreness to the team when players reconvened Monday.

Sam Darnold has been atop the depth chart at quarterback all spring and summer and will now be solidified as the starter to open the season. Nick Mullens will be the clear backup, with Jaren Hall also on the roster entering his second year. O’Connell said Tuesday that he has no immediate plans to add another quarterback.
