Two people on a fishing boat were safe Tuesday after a whale struck their boat and capsized it off the coast of New Hampshire, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The incident occurred Tuesday near Odiorne Point State Park. The Coast Guard sent a message to X that they had received a distress call reporting that a 23-foot center console boat had capsized due to a whale breach.

“The occupants were thrown from the vessel when the boat capsized,” the Coast Guard said, adding that an urgent maritime information broadcast was made and the Portsmouth Harbor Coast Guard Station was alerted.

“A Good Samaritan pulled both people from the water. No injuries were reported,” the Coast Guard said.

The crew of the Station Portsmouth boat reported that the whale did not appear to be injured. The incident was reported to the Center of Coastal Studies Marine Animal Hotline and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The ship has also been recovered.
