Florida teen bitten by a shark during a lifeguard training camp

In the doghouse: A member of Santa Fe’s K-9 unit is the focus of an internal affairs investigation

PONCE INLET, Florida — A shark bit a Florida teenager in the leg Monday morning during a lifeguard training camp, officials said.

The attack happened just before noon near the Ponce Inlet lifeguard tower, Volusia County Beach Safety officials said. The 14-year-old boy was practicing water entry when he landed on a shark.

The teen’s injuries were not considered life-threatening, officials said, and he was taken by his parents to receive stitches.

Monday’s attack comes just days after two separate biting incidents in nearby New Smyrna Beach. A 26-year-old man was bitten in the foot Friday while floating in an inner tube, and a 21-year-old man was bitten Thursday while playing football in shallow water.
