Calvin Cordozar Broadus Junior, born on 20 October 1971, is better known as Snoop Dogg. The stage name has an interesting origin, thanks to his mother, Beverly Tate.

Discovered by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg has been a prominent figure in the rap scene since 1992, when he featured on Dre’s debut album, The Chronic. In 1993, he released his debut album, Doggystyle, also produced by Dre. The name “Doggystyle” quickly became iconic.

In 2012, he briefly changed his name to Snoop Lion after a trip to Jamaica, releasing a reggae album under that name. However, he soon reverted to Snoop, feeling no need to change something that worked so well.

Surprisingly, the inspiration for his stage name comes from the Peanuts cartoon. In an interview with Lester Holt on NBC Nightly News in September, while in France for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Snoop revealed the origin. His mother used to say he watched Snoopy so much that he started to resemble the character. She called him Snoopy throughout his life, never using his real name. This nickname stuck and became his identity in various aspects of his life.

The revelation about his name’s origin surprised many when it was shared on Reddit. One user commented, “Savage! Literally roasted by his own mother haha,” while another noted, “That’s more of a wholesome origin than I expected.” Another person joked, “Even his own mom was like, ‘Nah. That name is crazy. I’m gonna make up a new one.’”

For those unfamiliar, Snoopy is a cartoon beagle from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, which gained popularity over the years.

Every day’s a school day.
