Israel blocks Gaza ceasefire despite Hamas flexibility

Israel continues to block a ceasefire agreement a year after the Gaza war began, despite Hamas showing flexibility, stated Khalil Al-Hayya, Hamas’ chief negotiator and deputy Gaza chief, during a speech broadcast on Hamas’ Aqsa television on Sunday.

Attempts by Arab mediators Qatar and Egypt, with support from the United States, have so far failed to resolve disputes between the conflicting parties. These efforts aimed to end the war, facilitate the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held in Gaza, and free many Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Al-Hayya noted that even with Hamas’ willingness to compromise on a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his administration continue to delay and sabotage discussions. Both Israel and Hamas blame each other for the lack of progress, with each side accusing the other of setting unachievable conditions.

Al-Hayya emphasized that Hamas would not concede on its demands for Israel to end the war, withdraw its forces from Gaza, allow displaced residents to return to their homes, and agree to a prisoners-for-hostages exchange. Netanyahu has insisted that the war will only conclude when Hamas is completely defeated.
