Russian strikes kill 1, injure 5 in Zaporizhzhia

Russian forces carried out another series of strikes on Zaporizhzhia, a city in southeastern Ukraine, on Monday evening. These attacks killed one individual, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. A city official, quoted by public broadcaster Suspilne, reported that five people, including a 13-year-old girl, were injured. Earlier strikes on the city, during the day and the previous night, left at least 23 individuals wounded.

Fedorov, using the Telegram messaging app, mentioned that the latest assault destroyed two houses. However, the type of weapon used remains unclear. Infrastructure in the city was also targeted, causing a fire that emergency services quickly extinguished without any casualties. A Russian missile strike earlier in the day hit critical infrastructure and injured at least two people, with another missile landing in an open area.

Late on Sunday, Russia launched at least seven air strikes. These attacks wounded 21 individuals and damaged 13 apartment buildings, educational institutions, cars, and garages, according to Fedorov. He suggested that Russian forces likely used guided aerial bombs. Independent verification of these reports could not be carried out. Although Russia denies targeting civilians, thousands have been killed and injured since Moscow initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Ukraine’s emergency services posted a video on Facebook showing rescuers clearing debris outside an apartment building and aiding wounded individuals in front of a damaged residential structure. Russia also launched two guided air missiles and four attack drones targeting Ukraine overnight, according to Ukraine’s air force. Three drones were shot down over the northeastern Sumy region, while air defences intercepted the two missiles and one drone.
