Phoenix could finally break its streak of 100-degree days

PHOENIX — After a summer full of collapses, Phoenix finally gets a glimpse of a cooling off period.

The National Weather Service predicts that the maximum temperature on Tuesday will be only 34.4 degrees Celsius.

This ends a streak of 113 consecutive days with temperatures above 37.7 degrees Celsius.

“It’s about time,” Ramiro Solis said as he enjoyed a walk near downtown Phoenix Tuesday morning. “That 100-degree weather, it’s not good at all.

The last time the high in Phoenix was below 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) was on May 26. The next day it reached 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 degrees Celsius), marking the beginning of a streak of temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Since then, Phoenix has broken more than a dozen district heating records including the most days with 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 C) or warmer — 61 — and 39 mornings with lows only dipping into the 90s.

“When it’s 105 or 110, it’s just too hot,” said Tim Foster, 40, who delivers food on his electric bike in Phoenix. “Now that it’s cooler, I can get out longer and work. I can get ahead of my bills and things like that.”

But temperatures above 30 degrees are not over yet, according to the weather service.

Highs for Wednesday to Saturday are expected to be between 36 and 40 degrees Celsius, with Sunday 38.8 degrees Celsius and Monday 39-4 degrees Celsius.

“We’re pushing into the fall season. There’s going to be more ups and downs,” said meteorologist Sean Benedict. “That’s normal for this time of year.”

That wasn’t what Solis wanted to hear.

“We’re only two weeks out from October and we’re still dealing with the heat,” Solis said. “Do I like it? Not really. You just learn to live with it.”
