Margot will play Catherine Earnshaw, while the Saltburn actor will portray her iconic lover Heathcliff, according to Term.

The news was met with widespread criticism, with some criticizing the “weird” and “terrible” casting and the age gap between the actors and the characters.

Cathy is about 19 years old when she dies in the book. Heathcliff is about 22 years old at the time and in his early forties when he dies.

Many expressed their anger on social media over the choice to use two stars who “look like they belong on Instagram” in a film set in the 19th century.

Some even claimed that 38-year-old director Emerald Fennell, who also helmed Saltburn, ‘hasn’t read’ Emily Brontë’s classic novel.

Elsewhere, there have been fierce complaints on social media about the ‘whitewashing’ of the romantic lead, with Heathcliff often described as ‘dark-skinned’ and the victim of ‘racist abuse’.

In the book, Heathcliff, one of the most notorious and complex romantic heroes in Western literature, is described as having dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin. He is often assumed to be of Roma or Gypsy descent.

It is unknown to what extent Fennell’s version will follow the book.

Following the announcement, fans took to Twitter to voice their displeasure, with one writing: “Just a not-so-friendly reminder: Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights is explicitly dark-skinned and Romani, and his experiences as a man of color inform his entire character and story as a man who endures racist abuse at the hands of his adoptive family.”

Another added: ‘I find it so unfair and ridiculous how casting directors in Hollywood continue to leave canonical BIPOC characters out of major roles, especially in classic literature and historical roles like Wuthering Heights. The 2011 film adaptation is the only one that really does Heathcliff justice.’

“Guys, I can ONLY assume that Emerald Fennell is not actually adapting Wuthering Heights. She’s just using it as inspiration and it’s loosely based on Wuthering Heights. The only similarities are the character names and it’s set in modern times. So it’s a completely different story, right?” someone joked.

Another wrote: ‘This is honestly the worst casting I have ever seen. I am speechless at how Emerald Fennell has committed to never being hired.’

A third joked: ‘I can’t wait to hear that distinctive Yorkshire sound!’

Margot’s LuckyChap company is on board to produce the film. LuckyChap also produced two of Emerald’s other films: Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

The film is currently in pre-production and is set to begin filming in the UK next year.

Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, published in 1850, is considered a masterpiece of English literature.

The story revolves around the tumultuous relationship between the brooding Heathcliff, an orphan adopted by the Earnshaw family, and Catherine Earnshaw, the family’s youngest daughter.

Their love is passionate yet complex, marked by obsession, jealousy and revenge.

There have been a number of film adaptations of the book over the years, perhaps the best known of which is the 1939 version directed by William Wyler and starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier.

The most recent film adaptation is Andrea Arnold’s 2011 film, starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.

Margot recently starred in the blockbuster Barbie, which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide and received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Her next project is Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, due out in May.

Elordi recently played the iconic Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.

He will also be seen in Justin Kurzell’s The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
