LANCASTER, Massachusetts — Two guards were stabbed by inmates at a maximum-security prison in Massachusetts. Three others were injured when they arrived at the scene, a spokesman said.

The five officers from the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster were taken to the hospital after the confrontation Wednesday night, Scott Croteau, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections, said in a statement Thursday.

“The facility is currently secure while an investigation is conducted to determine the facts and circumstances,” he said.

The two officers suffered stab wounds and the other three were injured while responding, the statement said. Details of the injuries were not provided.

The Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union posted online that an officer was stabbed in the back and head. It called for more action from the department.

“How much more must our members endure before you decide to keep them safe? The inmates literally run the asylum. Do your job,” the post read.
