Fire on Sydney’s northern beaches spreads, too late to evacuate

Australia’s New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) raised an alarm at 2.39pm on Saturday concerning a fire on Meatworks Avenue, Oxford Falls. Initially a hazard reduction burn, the fire on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has now escalated and is out of control.

The emergency alert specifically targets the Cromer Heights area. Residents in Pinduro Place, Jersey Place, Maybrook Avenue, and Kirrang Street are urged to seek immediate shelter, as it is now too dangerous to evacuate. By 3pm, Lady Penryhn Drive in Beacon Hill was also added to the warning.

Those in Narraweena and Cromer have been told to prepare for possible ember attacks. Photos and videos shared online reveal thick smoke visible from Sydney’s CBD, and an orange glow near a retirement community.

RFS spokesman Inspector Ben Shepherd confirmed the fire is moving south-east towards Willandra Road, driven by north-westerly winds. He advised people in the affected area not to attempt to leave. Willandra Road has been closed between McIntosh Road and Little Willandra Road.

Hundreds of firefighters are tackling the fire along the Northern Beaches, supported by water-bombing aircraft. Shepherd explained the fire started as a controlled burn that spread beyond its containment lines. Firefighters are working to bring it under control before nightfall.

Residents have shared images of the fire on social media, with some urging onlookers to stay clear of roads to allow emergency services easier access.

Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed they are assisting with nine fire trucks focused on protecting properties.

Earlier this week, the RFS advised people to spend the weekend preparing for bushfire season. Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib warned of expected hot, dry conditions this summer, adding that fast-growing vegetation is drying out, increasing the fire risk.

RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers highlighted that since July, volunteers have responded to over 1,100 bush and grass fires. A total fire ban was declared in Sydney on Thursday.
