Alex Greenwood admitted that ‘sometimes you have to win ugly’ after her side got past Brighton.

Last season’s WSL Golden Boot winner Bunny Shaw scored her first of the season in the 44th minute and it proved enough to secure the win.

“We got the job done,” Greenwood said. ‘Sometimes you have to win ugly in this competition.

‘I thought we were better from the ball. We worked very hard on that and I thought we saw an improvement.

‘This competition is getting tougher and tougher every year, and we’ve seen that at Brighton. It was a difficult match. We’ll get the win and the clean sheet all day long.’

Meanwhile, next Sunday’s match between Chelsea and Manchester United has been postponed due to the welfare of the players, despite the match having already been sold out.

Women’s Professional Leagues Ltd (WPLL), the company responsible for the top two levels of football, made the decision due to the scheduling of Chelsea’s Champions League matches.

The draw for the group stage only took place last Friday, the matches were announced on Saturday, and UEFA announced that Chelsea would play Real Madrid a week tomorrow – just two days after their match with United, which was due to be broadcast live on Sky Sports .

Both Chelsea and the WPLL asked UEFA to postpone the Blues’ match, but the governing body, which announced their fixture list over a year ago, stood by their decision.
