Boston school bans smartphones to tackle bullying

Boston Grammar School in Lincolnshire has banned smartphones to combat online bullying and eliminate the negative impact of social media. Teachers noted the school’s Digital Detox initiative has improved student interaction and reduced bullying instances.

The Department for Education issued guidelines earlier this year aimed at curbing mobile phone use during school hours to reduce classroom disruptions and enhance behaviour.

In the 2023/24 academic year, Boston Grammar School reported that half of the incidents leading to student isolation were linked to mobile phones. Since the ban, no incidents have been reported.

Deputy headteacher Peter Barnsley stated the goal was to create a safe environment free from external issues amplified by mobile phones and group chats. The policy has significantly decreased incidents that might have escalated due to mobile phone use.

Mornings at the breakfast club now see students engaging in conversations and completing homework instead of being glued to their phones.

A student shared that while the initial enforcement of the rule was lax, the new policy has established clear boundaries. Although adjusting was tough, it eventually became part of the school routine.

An unexpected outcome of the policy was increased chatter in hallways and during breaks. Mr Barnsley remarked that although the noise levels have risen, it is a positive change.

Forge Valley School in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, has enacted a similar policy. The school prohibits the use of smartphones, watches, and headphones on its premises. Students caught using these devices must surrender them, with the items returned only after 24 hours.
