Travis Kelce has praised Patrick Mahomes for not embarrassing him in pre-season play, admitting that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s insane behind-the-back pass got him out of jail.
During their game against the Detroit Lions in Arrowhead earlier this month, Mahomes enraged fans when he threw a behind-the-back pass to Kelce midway through the first quarter.
However, after his moment of genius, the three-time Super Bowl winner joked that he was mad at Kelce for running the wrong route before throwing the pass.
“I threw a pass behind my back out of spite,” he said. “But now it’s going to be a highlight!”
And while Kelce initially claimed he couldn’t hear Mahomes’ instructions because of his “mumbling” voice, he’s now admitted he wasn’t aware of his quarterback’s game plan after getting hilariously candid about the play.

While launching a new series by him and his brother Jason New Heights PodcastThe Chiefs tight end discussed Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass, saying, “That’s a smooth operator right there. I was gesturing to him, and I’m looking at Pat as I’m gesturing to him, like, ‘What did you say?’
‘Because the thing is, when you’re in the preseason, you don’t get a week to prepare for a preseason game. It’s just that you have the whole 300/400 plays that you’ve come up with and put in place in training camp, and then they take a couple of them and put them in the game plan. So you really have to go through your game plan.
‘[But] I wasn’t aware of the game plan and Pat Mahomes, he had something on the back of his head when I walked across the line of scrimmage and I was like, “What did you say?”
“I didn’t know what I was doing, so he had to shake something. And that’s why we love playing with Pat Mahomes, ladies and gentlemen; because even if you mess up, he’ll make it right.”
Jason then questioned his brother about the route he should take, to which Travis added, “Andy Reid has different options in his offense, and it’s because of a player like Pat Mahomes that you can use those different options.”
After Kelce took the wrong route, Mahomes faked a pass to his running back, ran to his right and then threw the ball behind his back, giving him space on the 30-yard line.

His teammate was able to catch the ball and gain a five-yard lead before being brought down at the 25-yard line.
The moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans reacting in disbelief to the inventive play.
“This is insane,” one commented, to which another added, “Oh, and this ends the rest of the NFL.”
A third wrote: ‘New move unlocked… the boy is just bored!’, while another was more sceptical, saying: ‘I dare him to try that in the regular season.’
