WASHINGTON — Former House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland is recovering from a mild stroke on Sunday, his office said.

Hoyer’s spokeswoman Margaret Mulkerrin said in a statement that Hoyer, who is 85, suffered a “mild ischemic stroke” Sunday night and sought medical attention. Hoyer responded well to treatment and has had no lasting symptoms from the stroke, Mulkerrin said. He plans to return to his normal schedule next week.

Hoyer, who has represented a Maryland district since 1981, served as the No. 2 Democratic House leader for more than a decade before stepping down in 2022 to make way for a new generation of leaders.
