A woman who was hit by a train after jumping onto the tracks to retrieve a lost item has been identified as a Vietnamese tourist.

Tuyet Nguyen, 52, was on holiday in Sydney visiting family when she was hit by a car at Punchbowl train station in Sydney’s south-west on Tuesday afternoon.

She had climbed onto the track to pick something up. She had dropped something, probably her slipper, but could not get back onto the platform.

Toan Huyn, Ms Nguyen’s cousin, told Daily Mail Australia his aunt went on holiday to Australia every year, where her sister lives.

Ms Nguyen regularly shared photos of her visits to Sydney on social media, including a holiday in 2022 and a trip last year, where she posted images of the Opera House.

The tragedy occurred during rush hour, when authorities blocked trains between Campsie and Bankstown as emergency services attempted to free Ms Nguyen from beneath the train.

She was immediately taken by ambulance to St. George’s Hospital, but tragically passed away there on Wednesday morning.

Police spoke to a number of witnesses at the scene and also viewed camera footage as part of their investigation.

The driver gave a negative breath test.
