“It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote in the post, which included a vintage photo of the couple. “I personally believe he is one of the most important actors in the history of film.

“Never daunted by any role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he liked, and you could never ask for more. A life well lived.”

Sutherland has appeared in more than 200 films and television series throughout his career, including 1970’s MASH, 1971’s Klute, 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1980’s Ordinary People, 1991’s Backdraft, and several films in the Hunger Games franchise.

The late actor was fondly remembered by many colleagues after being informed of his passing.

Jane Fonda, Sutherland’s Klute co-star and former love interest, said on Instagram that she was “heartbroken” when she heard of his death.

“Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared many adventures with me, including the FTA Show, an anti-Vietnam War tour performed in 1971 for 60,000 active-duty soldiers, sailors and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan,” Fonda said.

Sutherland’s MASH colleague Elliott Gould told the AP in a statement: “Donald was a giant, not just physically but also in talent. He was also enormously kind and generous.

“It is never easy to lose a person and an actor like Donald Sutherland, but this one really hurts because Donald was a brother to me and a huge part of my own career.”

Helen Mirren, who worked with Sutherland on the 2017 film The Leisure Seekers, called the late entertainer “one of the smartest actors I’ve ever worked with.”

She added: ‘He had a great inquisitive mind and a great knowledge of a wide range of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and with a serious attitude towards his profession as an actor. All this made him the screen legend he became.’

Filmmaker Ron Howard said on social media: ‘I was blessed to direct him in #Backdraft. One of the most intelligent, interesting and compelling film actors of all time.’

Howard praised Sutherland’s “incredible range, creative courage and dedication to serving the story and the audience with the very highest quality.”

Sutherland, in a 2017 interview with the AP about receiving an honorary Oscar, said he wouldn’t mind dying doing what he loved most.

“I really hope that in a movie that I do, I die — but I die, me, Donald — and they get to use my funeral and the casket,” Sutherland said. “That would be absolutely ideal. I would love that.”
