Caitlin Clark sets a new franchise record in the Indiana Fever’s home win over Phoenix Mercury, becoming the first rookie in WNBA history to record 400 points, 150 assists and 100 rebounds.
The 22-year-old point guard scored 20 points and dished out 13 assists, nine of which came in the first quarter alone, breaking the Fever’s record for most assists (seven) in a single quarter on Friday night in Indianapolis.
Guard Kelsey Mitchell and center Aliyah Boston also contributed to the team’s 96-85 victory with 28 and 21 points, respectively.
Indiana’s win over Phoenix comes as a surprise to many, as the Mercury have three players headed to the 2024 Olympics in Paris: guards Diana Taurasi and Kahleah Copper, and center Brittney Griner.
Clark was handed an Olympic lifeline on Thursday when it was reported that the 40-year-old Taurasi is struggling to recover from a leg injury in time for the Games, leaving the No. 1 overall pick in the draft a surprise late-game call-up to the U.S. women’s basketball team.
