America’s 10 most affordable retirement-friendly beach towns – with SIX in one state

Calabash, North Carolina, tops the list of most affordable beach towns for retirees

Florida has long been considered America’s hot spot for retirees, but many coastal vacations in the state have become increasingly unaffordable.

However, new research has revealed the top ten most affordable beach towns for retirees, six of which are in the Sunshine State.

To find the best and cheapest places on the coast for people to spend their old age, Makelaar.com analyzed census data to find areas with a high proportion of residents over the age of 55.

Researchers then studied the May data to find places where homes are selling for a low price per square foot.

Topping the list is Calabash, North Carolina, a quaint fishing village known as the fishing capital of the world.

According to Realtor.com, the average home in Calabash lists for $367,100, which is lower than the national average.

In addition to its famous dining options, the city also has a number of facilities that cater to seniors.

“Retirees appreciate the affordable cost of living, pleasant climate and easy access to medical facilities, major freeways and two airports,” said Lisa Ragland of Epique Realty.

‘This charming coastal community on the border of North Carolina and South Carolina is far enough away from lively Myrtle Beach, yet just steps from the acclaimed golf courses, entertainment, culture, dining and shopping along the Grand Strand.’

In second place is Lillian, Alabama, where the average asking price for a home is $349,500.

The city is known for its tranquil waterways and natural beauty, and fishing and boating opportunities abound in Perdido Bay.

According to Realtor.com, Lillian has a population of less than 2,000, but it’s also just a short drive from the beautiful beaches of the bustling Gulf Coast.

In third place is Punta Gorda, Florida, where the average home sells for $429,000.

While Florida is an attractive retirement destination for many Americans due to its warm weather and lack of state income tax, this quiet coastal town also offers its residents many of the benefits of a big city.

This also includes an award-winning hospital and a conference centre that hosts art, wine and jazz festivals.

Sunset Beach, North Carolina, ranks fourth.

In addition to the beautiful coastal homes, which list for an average price of $339,900, residents also benefit from the state’s lower tax burden.

Not only does North Carolina not tax Social Security benefits, but all other retirement income is taxed at just 4.75 percent.

In fifth place is Grant-Valkaria, Florida, where the average home sells for $497,500.

In addition to more affordable housing, the city is also located on the five-mile-long, scenic Indian River Lagoon, offering ample opportunities for swimming, fishing, and boating.

Englewood is also located in the Sunshine State and ranks sixth on the list.

Located on the southwest coast, the city has an average asking price of $439,300 and offers plenty of historic charm, markets and excellent restaurants.

Crystal River, Florida, is ranked No. 2 on Realtor.com’s list, with the average home listed for $369,900.

Known as the Manatee Capital of the World, the area is rich in parks and wildlife, and offers easy access to golf courses and the Gulf of Mexico.

Additionally, Orlando and Tampa are just over an hour away by car for those looking for big city amenities.

With less than 500 inhabitants, it is the ideal place for anyone looking for a small-scale experience.

There is also a golf course, a country club, a sailing school and a hospital.

Number 9 on the list is Venice, Florida, with a bustling city center with dozens of restaurants and shops, set on a beautiful coastline.
