Whoopi Goldberg broke down in tears during Wednesday’s episode of The View as she reunited — and performed — with the cast of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and promised fans that a third film would definitely make its way to the big screen.

In the latest installment of the ABC daytime show, Whoopi, 68, reminisced with the cast of the beloved sequel as they celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary with an incredible live performance of Joyful, Joyful.

Whoopi wasted no time in transforming into her beloved character Sister Mary Clarence, even donning a nun’s habit as she made a very important announcement, telling viewers, “Don’t forget that Sister Act 3 is in the works.” The script has arrived and I can’t wait for the day when I can say, ‘Come on,’ because we got the green light!’

The mother of one was flanked by Kathy Najimy, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Wendy Makkena as she shared the exciting news, and was overcome with emotion moments earlier as the ladies rushed to comfort her.

Viewers tuning in at home absolutely loved the reunion and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts, with one person writing: ‘BRAVA BRAVO!!! THANK YOU!! #TheView THE INJECTION OF JOY WE NEED!!!”

Another person tweeted, “I rewinded this three times y’all. I needed this cleanser. There is so much gloom and doom in the world. Plus, everyone is really having a good time, and Whoopi looks like a proud mom. You rarely see her emotional. This was good!’

And a third fan said: ‘I’m crying! OMG! SISTER ACT 2! 30th anniversary! I didn’t even cry during the actual movie!’ and a fourth added: ‘Happy Happy. Yes it is!! Whoopi is emotional and so am I.’

Someone else claimed: ‘[The View’s] The Sister Act reunion had tears of joy flowing! What a feel-good episode! #TheView,” and another person admitted, “I’m inconsolable. Absolutely inconsolable. This movie means so much to me, I can’t even put into words how perfect this was. My heart needed this so much today. Thank you.’

The latest update comes after DailyMail.com exclusively revealed in November 2023 that Whoopi is keen to cast Jennifer Hudson in Sister Act 3.

The highly anticipated project was greenlit in December 2020, and Whoopi was reportedly keen to ‘figure out’ the finances and ‘move quickly’ on production – which hit a ‘traffic light’ due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes..

“One person who would like to add Whoopi to the film is Jennifer Hudson, especially after seeing what Jennifer did with the character when she did Sister Act for Halloween on her show last year,” a source told DailyMail.com at the time.

“It would be a no-brainer to get Jennifer, Whoopi would love it if that happened.”

Jennifer wowed The View cohost (and Sister Act fans) last year when she dressed up as Whoopi’s famous character and delivered a breathtaking medley from the film franchise.

Whoopi had nothing but praise for the star’s tribute at the time, joking on The View that she could lose her role to the EGOT winner.

The insider continued: “The new Sister Act is going to happen. They have the idea, they have Whoopi. Once the strikes are over, they will be ready to make the film for the fans and a new generation.

‘They’re not at a dead end; they are more likely to be at a traffic light. They have to figure out what the money is and who to cast, but Whoopi is eager to get the ball rolling and she has a feeling that once Hollywood gets back to work, Sister Act will move quickly.

‘It will happen. Whoopi isn’t going to let this die. Everything comes back – Coming to America came back!’

The insider also claimed that the film will be a “celebration” with an “endless number of cameos.”

“Good times are coming,” they said. “Whoopi is ready and already has a handful of non-puns for the tagline and what they want to call the movie.”
