Roy Keane has criticized Kylian Mbappe for his ‘excessive’ actions after the France captain returned to the field of play without the referee’s permission.

The striker suffered a nasty injury late in the 1-0 win over Austria, which left him bleeding profusely.

He broke his nose after a header, but landed on the shoulder of Austrian player Kevin Danso.

Mbappe was forced off due to a medical intervention, but then returned to the pitch without the referee’s permission, before sitting on the pitch and being shown a yellow card by the match official.

After the match, Manchester United legend Keane slammed Mbappe’s apparent deliberate waste of time.

Keane told ITV Sport: ‘He gets injured, tries to stop the game, he sits on the pitch, I don’t like seeing this. This is not okay.

“Listen if he has been told by the manager to come back into action, he has clearly had treatment which he has come off of.

‘I know players can make mistakes, but to be back on the pitch, he deserved that yellow card. I don’t like seeing that.’

After presenter Laura Woods said it was ‘not good gamesmanship’, Gary Neville said: ‘He is looking at (Didier) Deschamps and the manager has ‘got to work’ and I think he will feel he has put himself in the has failed.’

Ian Wright also felt Deschamps had a role to play, as he said: ‘Obviously someone has told him (to get back on the field).

“Hopefully that won’t cost him anything down the road.”

Deschamps also received a yellow card from the referee for his involvement in the incident.

Blood poured from Mbappe’s nose after his sickening clash with Ganso.

The player, who moves to Real Madrid after the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, played a role in the only goal of the match.

It was his cross that was put into his own net by the Austrian Maximilian Wober.

Mbappe missed a golden one-on-one chance during the match, meaning he has yet to find the back of the net at a European Championship – despite his prolific form in the last two World Cups.
