Roy Hodgson once bizarrely sold the wrong player when he was manager of Liverpool.

Hodgson’s time in charge of the Reds certainly did not go to plan: he was appointed in July 2010 and left in January 2011.

One particular incident perhaps epitomizes Hodgson’s time at the club, when he brought the wrong player to Fulham as part of the deal that saw Paul Konchesky leave for Anfield.

Konchesky ultimately played just eighteen games for Liverpool and was loaned out to Nottingham Forest in January 2011.

Hodgson certainly does not want to be reminded of his transfer error.

In the closing stages of the 2010 summer transfer window, Liverpool agreed to let youngsters Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic leave as part of the deal for Konchesky, along with a fee of £3.5 million.

However, it later emerged that Hodgson actually did not want Kacaniklic to leave and instead wanted to sell another player called Alex.

Hodgson realized his mistake but by then it was too late as Kacaniklic had already made up his mind to join Fulham.

Kacaniklic said football channels in a podcast: ‘It was a bit difficult for Liverpool to replace me, but when I was at Fulham and before I signed up I had a chat with Roy Hodgson on the phone where we found out he had picked the wrong Alex .

“In his head he thought he had sold another Alex for Konchesky. But then it was too late. It’s a bit of fun!

‘Then he just told me that I was welcome in Liverpool with open arms, but that I could do what I felt. By then I had already made up my mind and was very excited about coming to Fulham.”

Kacaniklic, now 32 years old, currently plays for AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

At Liverpool, the winger impressed at youth level but did not play for the first team.

He made 100 appearances for Fulham (47 of which were in the Premier League) and scored eleven goals in all competitions.

During his time at Fulham, Kacaniklic was loaned out to Watford, Burnley and Copenhagen.

A move to Nantes followed in 2016 and he later played for Hammarby and Hajduk Split before signing for AEL Limassol in 2022.

On the international stage, Kacaniklic scored three goals in 21 games for Sweden between 2012 and 2020.
