Taking a swipe at Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, the Congress on Sunday said he will be sworn in tonight as “the leader of the Narendra Destructive Alliance (NDA)” even though he lacks any legitimacy.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Remember May 28, 2023? It was the day Narendra Modi walked into the new Parliament building with the Sengol for which a history of August 15, 1947 was fabricated ‘to not only justify Modi’s pretensions of being Samrat but also to also appeal to Tamil electorate.”

“That day itself, I had exposed Modi’s forgeries using archival material,” he said.

“We now know the outcome of that drama. The Sengol remains a revered symbol of Tamil history, but the Tamil electorate and even the Indian electorate have rejected Mr Modi’s pretensions,” Ramesh said.

The Congress leader alleged that Modi has suffered a huge personal, political and moral defeat.

Modi has been forced to bow to the Constitution he has undermined over the past decade, Ramesh said.

“A much diminished ‘one-third’ Pradhan Mantri, who now lacks all legitimacy, has managed to get himself sworn in as leader of the Narendra Destructive Alliance (NDA) this evening,” he said.

Modi will be sworn in tonight. The dignitaries and special guests attending the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening include leaders from India’s neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region.

While the BJP could not win a majority on its own in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the party-led National Democratic Alliance won 293 of the 543 seats. The Congress won 99 seats in the polls. The majority figure in the lower house is 272.
