A European football club has reportedly emerged as the ‘frontrunner’ to sign Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood.

The sun claims the 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, is ‘getting closer to leaving the Red Devils’.

It comes after Greenwood, who was also named Getafe’s player of the season, published a statement on his Instagram last week appearing to part ways with the LaLiga club following the end of his loan spell.

“The Getafe family and fans are incredibly grateful for a great season,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you for making me feel welcome and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, together with my teammates and club.

‘A bittersweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you. I wish you the best.’

While Getafe would have liked him to stay for another season, there has been speculation as to where the United Academy graduate will move.

Mail Sport previously reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his leadership group were working to sell the forward, with his contract set to expire in 2025.

Greenwood has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, with several Premier League clubs having expressed an interest in signing him, while Napoli had ‘contacted United to express interest in the player’, according to The Athletic.

The sun are now claiming that Juventus are taking the lead in signing the forward and claim that the Serie A side have been monitoring Greenwood since Christmas.

The outlet adds that a number of scouts traveled to watch him play for Getafe and were impressed by his performances, with Greenwood scoring ten goals and six assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.

Borussia Dortmund are another club who appear to be interested in signing the 22-year-old and will make a decision on whether to sign him after Saturday’s Champions League final.

In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behavior. The case against him was dropped in 2023 after key witnesses withdrew.

United have also conducted an internal investigation into the matter and have opted to loan the £75,000-a-week loan. On transfer deadline day last September, he was set to join Getafe on a season-long contract.

It was recently reported that the £2million mansion he used to live in had been put up for rent, leading to further speculation about his future at United.
