James Maddison has left England’s training camp after it was revealed on Wednesday that the Tottenham midfielder would not be named in England’s final squad for Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate will announce his final squad for the summer tournament in Germany on Saturday and the Spurs star was widely seen as at risk of missing out on a call-up after a disappointing second half of the season.

The Spurs midfielder, who came as a replacement against Bosnia on Monday eveningwill not go to Germany again after that South gate decided the former Leicester man would not make his 26-man side.

It is understood Maddison was lined up to play in the final warm-up match against Iceland on Friday, but that will no longer be the case with Jarrod Bowen pushing to take his place in the team.

England boss Southgate is due to bring back his original 33-man squad at midnight on Friday and Maddison is a high-profile omission.

In addition to Maddison, six more players will have to be excluded from the England final squad

News of Maddison’s elimination comes after Southgate received good news over injury doubt Luke Shaw, who has accelerated his recovery from a hamstring injury and given England a major fitness boost.

The Manchester United full-back has not played for three months, but was still selected in the extended squad.

However, doubts remain over his availability for the tournament given his injury problem and prolonged inactivity.

But Shaw has now taken a major step forward in proving his fitness before Southgate names his final 26-man side for the tournament on Saturday.

Shaw has returned to training on the grass and although he is not yet able to complete full training sessions with the team, his inclusion, in parts, in his teammates’ schedules indicates he is making good progress.

It seems likely that even if Shaw is deemed fit enough to make the final, his participation in England’s group matches will be minimal.

But if Shaw is deemed fit to play a leading role in the knockout stages, his presence would be a huge boost for England given his position as the country’s number one left-back.

England take on Iceland in their final warm-up match before flying to Germany.

Harry Kane returns to the starting line-up after starting Monday’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but Ivan Toney will be given the chance to book his place in the final squad from the bench.

Manchester City and Manchester United contingent Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, Kobbie Mainoo and John Stones will be available after missing the win at St James’ Park earlier this week.
