City of Troy have won the Epsom Derby, with trainer Aidan O’Brien claiming a record-extending 10th win in the iconic race.

Jockeyed by Ryan Moore, who won last year on Auguste Rodin and is now recording his fourth victory, this marks a stunning turnaround for the three-year-old.

In May, City of Troy flopped in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, finishing ninth, but O’Brien was always optimistic about his horse’s chances.

Loose horse Voyage crossed the line first after dethroning Pat Dobbs, but it was City of Troy, emerging from the middle of the pack, who claimed victory.

“It was hard to know what would happen today, but I was very confident we had the best horse,” Moore said.

“We did a few things wrong at Newmarket but we put that right today.

‘With the loose horse in front of him he was a bit unsure, but he held strong. We have to be happy with today.’

Ambiente Friendly managed to finish second, while City of Troy’s stablemate Los Angeles came home in a commendable third place.

O’Brien said: ‘The people who were directly involved with this horse… everyone, so many people, who put their heart and soul into this.

‘He looked absolutely special. The class they have, both speed and endurance. Ryan had an incredible ride.

‘We knew things went completely wrong at the Guineas. I made mistakes training him and that’s what it comes down to. He was too fresh and unprepared. That’s the reality of it.

‘We all know it and we talk about it all the time and we learn from it. Everything has been beautiful since then. Ryan said he was very babyish and green today.

‘It’s so exciting for everyone. He is an incredible horse.

Is he the best derby winner O’Brien has had? “There’s no doubt about it,” the legendary coach said.
