An elderly Thai couple lost more than 200,000 baht worth of gold accessories after burying them in their backyard in the northern province of Lamphun on Monday, June 3.
The elderly man, 71 year old Prawet Sitha, asked officers from Pasang Police Station to help track down the thief who dug up the gold accessories from his backyard.
Prawet explained to the police that he and his wife, 69 year old Somboon Phudontong, planned to go to a nearby forest to search for mushrooms. Worried that a thief might take this opportunity to steal their valuables, Prawet buried their gold jewellery in the backyard.
Prawet disclosed that he dug a 30-centimetre deep hole under a longan tree about 4 metres away from his house on May 29. He placed all of the gold jewellery, including two necklaces and one bracelet, in the hole. He covered the hole with a mat and a chicken coop, with his chickens inside.
On June 3, Prawet and his wife wanted to wear their gold for a community event. However, when Prawet dug at the spot, he found nothing.
Prawet stated that this was not the first time he had buried the gold. He had done this several times before, changing the location each time. He was confident that the only person who knew about the buried gold was his wife.
Pasang Police Station promised to investigate the case and apprehend the thief. As of now, there are no updates on the matter.
Keeping gold at home or depositing it at a gold shop or bank seems like a better option. However, a Thai man recently shared a story with the media about his girlfriend, who was together for nearly 10 years, turning into a thief and stealing his gold.
According to the victim, his girlfriend stole gold jewellery that he kept in their shared house and sold it. She also stole his documents to gain access to his deposited gold bars and sell those as well.
