Bayern Munich star Aleksandar Pavlovic will miss the European Championship after suffering tonsillitis, with Germany forced to call in a replacement.

The defensive midfielder might have received a surprise call-up from Julian Nagelsmann’s side after winning just one cap against Ukraine nine days ago.

In fact, he was included in Nagelsmann’s squad for a round of international friendlies in March but was ruled out due to tonsillitis.

With the German team having the weekend off, Pavlovic did not return to the team in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Bild reports.

He was also absent from training on Monday and Tuesday, the report continues, and as such has now been excluded from the competition.

Those suffering from tonsillitis usually experience symptoms for about three to four days, although this can last longer, according to the NHS.

    Tonsillitis symptoms

The main symptoms in children and adults are:

    • a sore throat
    • problems swallowing
    • a high temperature
    • cough
    • headache
    • feeling sick and being sick
    • earache
    • feeling tired

Symptoms usually include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, high temperature, cough, headache, nausea and vomiting, earache and fatigue.

The NHS website also states that although surgical removal of the tonsils is very rare, it is usually only done for people who suffer from severe repeated attacks of tonsillitis.

With Pavlovic sidelined for the competition, Nagelsmann quickly named his replacement, calling up former Liverpool star Emre Can.

The Borussia Dortmund captain has had a strong season, guiding his side to the Champions League final, but failed to make the cut for his country’s final 26-player squad.

“We want another number six in the selection and have therefore decided to nominate Emre Can,” Nagelsmann said on Wednesday.

“He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team.

‘We wanted to have another player in the selection who has played a lot of games and knows how to handle the pressure. He can easily meet the profile we need now.’
