Terrifying moment mum and her baby take refuge inside a supermarket after being menaced by a knife wielding man while walking home – and shopkeeper’s heroic act

    The woman and her baby were forced to take refuge in a supermarket in Liverpool, western Sydney, after a man allegedly stalked her while armed with a knife.

    A woman pushing her newborn baby in a stroller was forced to take refuge in a supermarket after she was allegedly stalked by a knife-wielding stranger.

    The 72-year-old man is said to have followed the mother and baby on Elizabeth Drive in Liverpool, in Sydney’s western suburbs, just after 7pm on Friday evening.

    CCTV footage from a nearby supermarket shows the woman running inside and telling the store owner to lock the front doors.

    This was said by the owner of the supermarket, Simon Sari 9News he armed himself with a Stanley knife to protect both himself and the new mother.

    “All we see is a girl coming in and saying, ‘Close the door, close the door,’ and then we see a man chasing her with a knife,” Sari recalls.

    ‘She was shaking, she was terrified. She cried. She was so scared.’

    Mr Sari convinced the man to put the kitchen knife away before police arrived and knocked him to the ground.

    The mother is seen holding her daughter close to her chest before giving the baby a tender kiss on the head as the man puts on handcuffs.

    The 72-year-old man from Liverpool was charged with carrying a knife in public causing fear of safety and obstructing or obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty.

    “Emergency services were called to a business on the corner of Elizabeth Drive and Castlereagh Street, Liverpool, at around 7.10pm yesterday (Friday 17 May 2024) following reports of a man with a knife,” police said in a statement.

    ‘Police attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command attended and arrested a 72-year-old man.’

    He was granted conditional bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday.

    At 11:40 am on Saturday, police arrested the man and also charged him with two counts of stalking/intimidation with intent to cause physical harm.

    He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.
