Production on the feature film was initially scheduled to take place in 2022, although filming was pushed back several months due to scheduling conflicts.
Audiard spoke to Variety earlier this year and revealed that he didn’t initially envision Emilia Perez as a feature film.
The director told the media that he initially thought the project would take the form of “an opera libretto in four acts,” although he later changed his mind.
‘It was the first time an idea emerged [for a film] came to me in this form,” he added.
The filmmaker further stated that he shot the film primarily in studios because working on set gave him “more freedom for the parts that are sung and choreographed.”
He described his choice to film his project in a studio as “a return to a primal intuition.”
Emilia Perez is currently set to hit theaters in France on August 28.
