A malfunctioning car horn exposed three Thai drug traffickers at a police checkpoint in the central province of Kanchanaburi, leading to their immediate arrest and the seizure of 21 kilogrammes of hidden drugs.
Thong Pha Phum Police Station officers and Border Patrol Police arrested three Thai drug traffickers at a police checkpoint near the Thong Pha Phum Intersection in the Thong Pha Phum district of Kanchanaburi, on Monday, May 28.
Officers discovered 21 kilogrammes of drugs hidden in their dark blue Honda SUV, including 330,000 tablets of methamphetamine, also known as Yaba, two kilogrammes of crystal meth, and 60 bars of heroin. The drugs were worth an estimated 24 million baht.
Police recounted the incident that led to their arrest to PPTV HD that the SUV’s horn blared loudly and continuously as it approached the checkpoint, prompting police to check on the car due to concerns over their safety.
The driver panicked, claiming the horn had malfunctioned. The other two men supported his story but officers remained suspicious and requested to search the vehicle.
The search revealed modified front seats with hidden compartments packed with drugs while more drugs were found concealed in each door.
The three men eventually confessed to transporting the drugs from Sangkhla Buri district to a customer in the Mueang district of Kanchanaburi province.
The suspects were taken to the police station for questioning. Officers have not yet filed charges and will continue their investigation to apprehend the buyer and any other involved parties.
In a related report, the Narcotics Suppression Bureau seized more than 19 million Yaba pills and 18 million baht worth of assets during a drug operation from May 14 to 22.
Another drug bust was reported in the Isaan province of Bueng Kan yesterday, May 29. In this case, officers seized 139 kilogrammes of heroin valued at 280 million baht from a suspicious white pickup near the Bueng Kan-Nakhon Phanom border.
Authorities in the northern province of Chiang Mai also reported a successful operation yesterday, saying one million Yaba tablets were seized at a shopping mall near Chiang Mai International Airport.
