DANNY MURPHY: The English game needs Arsenal to triumph in Premier League title race… Man City are showing no sign of slowing down and it’s not good for the competition

Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world and Manchester City are an excellent team

    • City leads Arsenal by two points on the final matchday of the competition
    • Pep Guardiola’s side could win a fourth title in a row, the most of any team ever
    • When you are in the stadium you MUST support your own players. Listen to the It all starts! podcast

Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world and I am a great admirer of Manchester City.

But what would be best for English football is a dramatic late twist in the title race with Arsenal becoming champions.

I’m not coming from the point of view of a media pundit who just wants more drama to give us something to talk about.

I am genuinely concerned that an unprecedented fourth consecutive league title will not be the end of the road for City. Win again on Sunday and it could be five, six or seven, and that is not good for the competition.

City could have been vulnerable this season. They must have been tired from last season’s Treble, losing captain Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne suffering a long-term injury on the opening day. Erling Haaland barely played in December or January due to a new injury.

However, their dominance is not good for the Premier League and Arsenal winning the league would be good for the competition

But here we are, with City likely to beat West Ham and beat Arsenal again, having already beaten Liverpool.

The story in August will be more interesting if Arsenal cross the line to show they are winners and City have an extra incentive to take back the title.

People who describe City’s football as boring are jealous. It’s great to have the technical ability and discipline to be so good with and without the ball.

Trophies provide a feeling of invincibility. That’s why City keep winning and why something has to be done to shock the system.

Arsenal have been a fantastic competitor. You can see parts of City in their play, from the formation to inverted defenders and lots of ball possession. It is clear that manager Mikel Arteta has learned well under Guardiola’s tutelage.

City have that extra bit of elite quality. Ederson is the best footballing goalkeeper in the world. Rodri is the best deep-lying midfielder. De Bruyne is the best passer in the world and Haaland the best goalscorer.

They haven’t been perfect this season and it was an opportunity for others. I now fear we won’t have another winner until Guardiola leaves.

If Arsenal cannot win the league, we may not see another team do so until Guardiola leaves City

If Arsenal can’t win the league, we may not see it until Guardiola leaves City

It will be good for the English game if West Ham causes an upset. QPR and Aston Villa came close in 2012 and 2022 before City found a way. I hope Arsenal can dethrone them today.

We don’t want to be here in a few years’ time saying City’s dominance is a letdown. If Arsenal win, others might start to believe in it too.
