Never-before-seen footage has shown Australian cricketers reacting to the ugly incident in the Long Room at Lord’s during the last Ashes series, with one player calling aggressive spectators ‘f**king idiots’.

Pat Cummins and wicketkeeper Alex Carey made themselves public enemy No. 1 after punching Jonny Bairstow during the second Test match at Lord’s in London.

The incident was big news in the UK and Australia, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak weighing in on the scandal, while England fans roundly booed Cummins and Carey for the remainder of the series.

The normally calm MCC was also infuriated by the incident, with members almost clashing with Australian David Warner as the team walked through the long hall for lunch shortly after Bairstow’s dismissal.

The players’ immediate reaction is captured in the latest series of Prime Video’s The Test, airing later this week.

The documentary takes you into the dressing room shortly after the controversial incident, with Marcus Harris being jeered by his teammates as he tells them: ‘They (spectators) kicked off over the fence. I was like ‘you write the rules, you fucking idiots – it’s not our fault.’

Marnus Labuschagne adds: ‘One guy was foaming at the mouth. A guy kicked ‘Bull’ (David Warner) while he was going up the stairs.”

After the teams clashed during the lunch break, Labuschagne added, “You almost missed a lunchroom brawl. Jonny came in warm. He asks: ‘Are you happy with that?’ Davey (Warner) is in the middle of eating a chicken thing and he just stops and takes it out and says ‘yeah, whole.’ It was incredibly unaffordable.”

Usman Khawaja was shocked by the members’ abuse and recalled one of them telling him, “I can say whatever I want.”

‘One of the MCC members started injecting me. There were probably three of them shouting, but one of them was really inappropriate.”

Australian captain Pat Cummins is also emerging as the mastermind behind the plan to beat Bairstow.

“I saw him do it (wander out of his crease) a few balls in a row,” Cummins said.

“So I told ‘Kez’ (Carey) the ball earlier, throw it.”

The doco also includes footage of Cummins speaking to coach Andrew McDonald about his on-field clash with England pacer Stuart Broad.

“Broad said something like, ‘Too bad mate, that’s why you’ll be remembered… I can’t believe you did that,’” Cummins said.

“And I’m like, ‘Oh Broady, you’re such an upstanding citizen, aren’t you?’”
