Australian Fashion Week 2024: Daily Mail’s acid-tongued showbiz scribe ALI DAHER reveals most bizarre and deluded conversations he overheard at the runway shows

Australian Fashion Week continues to amaze, entertain and sometimes baffle with its creative and eccentric moments. (Note: None of the fashionistas, influencers or others depicted in the story are among those tapped - unless otherwise noted)

I’ve attended quite a few Australian Fashion Weeks over the years – and yet each new episode continues to amaze, entertain and often baffle me.

Yes, there’s no shortage of dazzling creativity on the runway shows, but for the outsider who isn’t part of the fashion elite, it’s the eccentric moments that really stand out.

This year, the whispers and wild rumors overheard from the front row of Sydney’s Carriageworks and other venues were as sensational as the outfits hanging from the models as they strutted their slender bodies down the catwalk.

One of the funniest moments I overheard happened on Tuesday’s Beare Park show, when an influencer you may have heard of breathlessly explained a health emergency to her manager.

‘I have to go right now. I’m going to get a scan. I’m so sick. I think it’s cancer,” she said.

The manager wasn’t too concerned and replied drily, “Maybe you’re sick because you’ve been starving yourself all week.” Try to eat something.’

    Ouch.

A day later, on Wednesday, the brutal reality of the influencer food chain was laid bare in another eyebrow-raising discussion.

My ears perked up at the Bec + Bridge showcase when an influencer confided in a friend who was more than willing to lend an ear.

“I just hit 100,000 followers and my agent says I’m still on the rise,” she lamented.

I could tell you who the alleged chair thief was, but she would never forgive me.

Perhaps the most quintessential “Fashion Week moment” occurred on Monday when I caught Carolina Santos — a former MAFS bride known for her skimpy outfits and penchant for televised adultery — brutally mocking a stylist.

The fashionista in question, Jamie Azzopardi, paraded through Carriageworks, flanked by an entourage of sitters tending to their extravagant dress.

Santos watched from a distance and said to me, “What the hell is that? Jamie thinks? [they] be at the Met Gala or something? Why do people hold on [their] clothes?’

Being compared to an arrival at the Met Gala must have been positively orgasmic for them.
