TOWSON, Md. — Workers at the first unionized Apple Store have now also authorized a first strike against the tech giant’s retail operations.
Apple Store workers in Towson, Maryland, voted late Saturday to authorize a strike, according to a statement from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, which represents the workers.
No date had been set for the strike. The vote followed what the union called “more than a year of negotiations with Apple management that produced unsatisfactory results.”
According to the statement, workers are looking for changes in what they call “unpredictable” scheduling practices and want wages that reflect local costs of living.
Workers at the store in suburban Baltimore voted to unionize by a nearly 2-1 margin in June 2022, joining a growing push in America’s retail, service and technology sectors to organize for better protections of the workplace.
Apple did not immediately return an emailed request for comment.
